My review of Star Trek

So, last week I went to see Star Trek with a few of my friends in Vegas. (For those of you whom I did not visit, please accept my apologies. I will be down there again sometime soon.)

I gotta be honest; I was a little skeptical about the move to begin with. Although I'm a closet trekkie, I was unsure about how this movie was going to play out. I decided to lower my expectations for the movie; as mentioned in last week's tweet. Much to the surprise of most (John's not one for these types of movies) we all thought it was quite good.

I was a little nervous when Leonard Nimoy made a cameo appearance, but writers did a fantastic job in scripting his part into the movie. I'm so glad they didn't ask William Shatner to be in it. That would have ruined the movie.

...but that's just my opinion. :)

My Provo Chick and Me

My chicken article was published today in the Mormon Times, and I thought I would share a picture of the chick I referenced with all of you.

This is the chick my brother received when he asked his date for the high school dance. I have to say, this whole to-do was pretty impressive. It sure beats some of the lame ways I asked girls out in when I was a teenager.

In case you haven't read the article yet, here's a brief as to why I decided to write about this chicken.

Though I was born in Provo, Utah, and have a lot of great memories there, the city just seems to come up with some really stupid laws and ordinances. Truth be told, all the blame can't rest on the city; city officials just try to cater to its residents. We all need to point the blaming finger on ourselves.

...and of course, every city has its idiosyncrasies. I'm just voicing My Opinion.

But, don't get me started on I15 traffic, or south of BYU campus parking restrictions, or the PoPo (cops) crashing house parties. (Did I mention that house parties in Utah rarely, if ever, have alcohol?) Yeah, who knew you could have so much fun without getting drunk, and the cops still show up?

(Note: I actually attended a party at a friends house one evening. Total number of people: 10. We were heavily engrossed with a game of Settlers of Catan -- a board game. We had music in the background, and... you guessed it. The cops showed up to break up the party. Apparently, we look suspicious?)

Anyway, I digress. I wanted to post the pic of the chick, and you got more than you asked for.

City Chickens

Provo City is allowing residents the raise chickens within city limits, and it doesn’t just have to be on a farm. Not everyone is in agreement on the topic either.

In my next Mormon Times article, I share my own story with a “chick” close to home. The article will be out Monday, May 4.

Let's be honest...

Who really like to wait for changes when they know they are coming? I don't.

I spilled the beans on my Facebook page about making some changes to my personal blog earlier this week. I figured I'd go ahead and make the change. Why wait?

There are still a couple of bugs that need working out. But, I thought you would all enjoy looking at something that is a little easier to read.

So, here it is. The new blog for My Opinions.

Successfully laid off

My post this week is about the challenges facing many singles out there today -- being laid off from a job. Of course I realize losing a job is not limited to the "single" population; it's a wide-spread pandemic.

I suppose the message I tried to convey was the fact that, for a resilient single, losing is not the end of the world. There may be challenges that come with it, but overall (and with a little ingenuity) you can make any situation work out.

What's up with the music player?

So, by now some of you may have noticed the music player at the bottom of my blog, and are probably wondering why that's there. Well, it may come to you by no surprise that I happen to enjoy music -- must be in the blood. :) And it got me thinking... (Dangerous, I know!)

I frequent a few blogs from time to time, and for the most part I enjoy looking through some peoples' play list they have posted on their blogs. On more than one occasion, I've actually gone to Amazon.com and purchased the music after taking a listen. That's probably why I have more than 15,000 songs on my iPod.

Anyway, I decided to add this on my blog as a way to share some of the music I'm finding online. I'll warn you, this list may get pretty eclectic. For those of you on my Facebook page, you know the range of music I listen to. I would say "I'm a little bit country, and I'm a little bit rock and roll" with everything in between.

As a side note, I will be making more changes to my blog in the near future. I'm looking for a new countdown clock for bobsledding again. I know this blog is in need of a serious revamp, so I'll get to it.

I’ve been toying with the idea about putting up a Facebook page that lets people know what I’m writing, where those are being posted and what I’m up to (including the bobsledding). I’m not sure what to think of this, yet; but since my last post, I thought I’d give it a try.

Anyway, I wanted my faithful blog readers to be the first to know about the page. Here’s the link…

I plan on keeping this up-to-date on my projects as well as random tidbits. I’m even going to be posting up a couple pictures from time to time – whenever those happen. I also think there will be more opportunity for easier conversation between each other. (The Google Blogger platform isn’t the best for keeping a stream of conversation available.)

This is a work-in-progress, but I have a lot of exciting things I'm working on; I hope to share them with you all on Facebook. Hope to see you there.

Don't add friends on Facebook

Really?

Within the last two days my Facebook inbox was riddled with "Don't add (named individual) on your Facebook account." It was a warning tell me to be leery about adding friends for fear my account my become compromised, or worse, deleted.

While I appreciate the concern my friends have for my Facebook account (honestly), wouldn't Facebook have come out with a world-wide warning -- cautioning its users to only add people they trust to their accounts?

I've been adding a lot of people to my friends list on Facebook, so I was a little concerned at first. However, after doing a little research, I found out that it seems to be another case of someone pulling the wool over all of our eyes. Click Here.

No worries, and no harm done.

So that said, I'm considering adding a page on Facebook for those that want to receive updates on what I'm doing. I'll update it with my blog, adventures I'm going on, etc. What say you?

A Regular Blogger

For the past couple weeks I've started blogging on Mormon Times. This all began by my association with a good friend from the Deseret News, Bob Wood. We had a conversation during my brother's Showcase competition; we discussed the fact that I had done a lot of writing in the past and that they were looking for someone to write for the mid-singles crowd -- keeping an LDS theme to it.

So, I began writing articles that discuss the matter of dating. (It seems to be a topic that comes up quite frequently.) There may be a lot of the articles coming in the future, but not all of them will be dating-based. However, they will be more focused on the challenges and topics we, as mid-singles, are faced with.

As a start, I have two all ready published -- expect more to follow on a weekly basis. I love writing, and look forward to continuing this in the month and years ahead.

Have you ever had your e-mail address caught on a spam list and tried to get it removed? Of course you have. I don't think I know anyone who hasn't.

Well, I just sent of my seventh complaint asking to have my address removed from a spam list. Have they responded? NO!

Does anyone know what can be done if the company doesn't comply? It's really starting to get annoying.

I don't remember when I first became a subscriber to T-Mobile, but I know it's been a few years ago.

Well, two days ago I received a text message from the company expressing thanks for being a customer of theirs for a few years and offered me unlimited minutes for the same amount I'm all ready paying.

Did I switch? That's a no-brainer! Of course I did. Who likes to count the minutes they use during the month? I don't.

Guess loyalty pays off, doesn't it?

New Team Logo

During the off-season, we take a little time to work on projects that get neglected due to a lack of time. (We are up on the mountain multiple hours during a day; three to four days a week.)

Start Seeing Motorcycles

This afternoon, I decided to get out and go for a leisure ride on my motorcycle. Typically, I'm not the type to ride slow and be cautious -- I'll be the first to admit that. Heck! It stems from being an Osmond. (If you're not pushing the out limits, you're not part of the family.)

Well, contrary to my nature, I was being extremely cautious and just enjoying the wind and the quasi-open road. I was driving the speed limit (in the right hand lane, of course!); making complete stops; and just being aware of what's around me.

Despite my best efforts to be cautious, I was almost hit TWICE!

As a plea for my motorcycle comrades, can everyone try a little harder to start seeing motorcycles?

No lie... I stopped at a 4-way; to my left, a red Bug. I swear, the driver looked directly at me and rolled right through the stop sign. She wasn't more than 2 feet away from me before she slammed on her brakes.

The other guy... he was just showing off to his girlfriend -- driving a Dodge Viper, nonetheless.

That's my soapbox for the evening.

About a week ago, I asked (on Twitter) which of my blog topics people enjoyed reading. I received a number of feedback comments; so, thanks for the response. And even though there were a number of differing opinions, dating seemed to come to the top.

Falling; falling fast

I typically don’t write much about my dating life; try to keep that on a personal level. However, I think I’m falling for a girl I’ve been out with recently.

We’ve been out a few times. I’ve taken her to dinner and rides on my motorcycle (when the weather has been cooperative). Tonight, I plan to do something special for her, but I’m not sure what. I need a couple ideas.

I don’t know if this potentially could result in marriage, but heaven knows my parents would be happy to see me finally settle down with someone special – get on with my life.

Anyway, that’s all for right now. I’m sure I’ll have an update for you after the date tonight.

A couple months ago I left the Blackberry world and purchased the G1. I never thought I would see the day when I would leave Blackberry; that phone was my brain! If I ever misplaced it, I was lost.

Well, I have a new love now. The G1.

Think iPhone, but better.

I just downloaded a new application for my phone the other day called Phonalyzr. It graphs your phone usage and lets you know who you are calling the most and the time you spend on your phone. (I'm not going to divulge the specifics... it's a little embarrassing.)

But, I did wanna share one thing I found out... I'm a momma's boy.

Yep, my mother is the one I call the most.

I was at the gym this morning, which got me thinking…

Why is it that guys have to walk around with their arms outstretched like a monkey?

Typically, girls bundle up and are greatly affected by the weather; guys, not so much. So, why do guys wear sweatshirts in the gym, while girls… well, not much?

Just a couple thoughts I had going through my mind at the gym.

What kind of Facebooker are you?

I was talking to a friend of mine about Facebook earlier today; specifically, what people use Facebook for. This got me thinking… “What type of Facebooker am I?”

Here are a couple titles I came up with:

Casual Facebooker – Most people fall into this category. This user logs into Facebook about 2-3 times a day; checking e-mail, pokes, and staying in touch with close friends.

Poker – This user is similar to the Casual Facebooker, but also initiates every “poke!” …rarely sending messages.

Friend-cacher – This user has +1000 friends, ninety percent of which he/she has never physically met.

Ubersocialite – This user’s social calendar is packed with Facebook parties throughout the month.

Mobile-uploader – This user is never at a computer, and would rather use his/her smartphone to update the status or reply to messages… occasionally, posting pictures on the go.

T.M.I.er – This user has no filter, especially when writing on your wall and commenting.

Tweeter – This user linked his/her Twitter account to Facebook and updates regularly.

Off-liner – This user is online and responds quickly to e-mail, but never uses the IM function of Facebook.

Groupie – This user invites all friends to every group.

Tagger – This is the photo enthusiast who tags everyone and every thing.

Application Junkie – This user has every application available on his/her Facebook page; even invites you to add a few!

Whatever you are… there you are. :)

It was a real treat to watch him share his talent with the audience; something he doesn't do very often.

Why do people find it funny to be someone their not? I suppose imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but it’s also deception.

So to dispel all falsities, this post is to let you know my father doesn’t have an interactive Facebook page. A few months ago, he asked me to set up an artist page on Facebook, but that’s it.

A couple days ago, Salt Lake City got dumped on by a Spring snow storm. I didn't think much of it until I left my apartment to go to the gym.

On the way to my car, and still half asleep, I heard tree branches above crackle under pressure from the added weight of the snowfall. The shuffle of branches caused snow to fall on my head and go down the back of my shirt. The cold rushing down my back made me jump forward; I didn't appreciate Mother Nature's wake-up call.

...but that was no wake-up call, more like a warning -- "LOOK OUT, BELOW!"

BANG!
